GREAT LANDSCAPE CACTI

Cacti in a landscape setting are often called accent plants.  Selecting the right cacti can add much to a landscape.  Choose cacti by its cold hardiness, flower, and sun tolerance.  Here are some recommendations.

Larger Upright Cacti

San Pedro (Trichocereus pachanoi), Cereus peruvianus, and Cereus monstrosus are the three best cacti for large accent plantings.

Clumping Cacti 3’ x 3’

Trichocereus hybrids morawetzia, doelziana; and Claret Cups (Echinocereus triblochidiatus) are three of the best cacti for smaller plantings.

Barrel type Cacti 2’ x 2’

Golden barrel (Echinocactus grusonii), Fishhook cactus (Ferocactus covillei), and (Ferocactus pringleii) are three of the best barrel type cacti for the Tucson landscape.

Small Landscape Cacti 1’ x 1’ or Smaller

Pincushion cactus (Mammillaria) – all full sun species, (Coryphantha) – most all species, and Echinocereus bonkeri all fit well in small rock areas or small corners.

Landscape cacti are low water users and accent your landscape with color and texture.
