Saguaro (Sahuaro)
Carnegiea gigantea |
Is there a plant that better represents the desert southwest than the Saguaro cactus? With some supplemental water and fertilizer the Saguaro can grow 12” per year. At 12-15 feet it may begin to put out arms. Mature plants produce 3-5” single, white blossoms (state flower of Arizona) on spring nights. Flowers remain open until the next afternoon. Oval fruits are edible.
