Desert Willow

Chilopsis lineraris

The Desert Willow can be grown as a small tree or a large shrub. This tree is astonishingly cold hardy to ten below zero as well as heat tolerant. You will be hard-pressed to find a tree that blooms as often and as long as this one; pink, burgundy, or white flowers entice hummingbirds and humans alike during spring, summer, and fall. Flowers of some cultivars are followed by long, skinny seedpods that hang on the tree through the winter. The bright-green leaves that cover the tree cast a light shade underneath the canopy. Desert Willow tolerates various types of soils, but will certainly do best in one that is well-draining. Complimentary plantings alongside the Desert Willow include the Palo Verde or Texas Ranger.
