For the Love of Nandinas
I love my Nandina domestica. This evergreen shrub, also known as Heavenly Bamboo, can survive a wide range of conditions- from full summer sun to full winter shade. Not many plants can thrive in such drastic conditions. For this reason, it can be planted just about anywhere.
Not only is the Nandina domestica diverse in where it can be planted, it is full of winter color. The Nandina’s bright red berries contrast and match with the green and red foliage for a brilliant winter show.
Nandinas also hold a special place in my heart for their low maintenance. Mine adjusted to the watering system like a champion with no noticed stress in the transition. Pruning and leaf litter are almost non-existent. No need to protect from frost either. Nandinas all over town made it through the Great Freeze of 2011. All in all, the Nandina domestica is one of my favorite shrubs for Tucson.
