Balloon Cactus

Notocactus (Parodia) magnificus

We were surprised to discover a small group of these beautiful cactus at a Phoenix grower.  Native to southern Brazil and nearby Uruguay, this plant is generally spherical and can shrink and expand in volume.  As the plant increases in size, it frequently throws offsets around its base and can develop a short columnar form. Flowers are a bright yellow. Flowering occurs in summer through early fall, often flowering more than once. Slow growing, this is an excellent selection for a pot. Accepts full winter sun but prefers filtered or afternoon shade in summer.  Requires little to no watering during the winter.  Needs protection at temperatures under 40 degrees.
