Cool Plants for Hot Gardens

October 15, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Greg first got interested in experimenting with new and unusual plants in 1981 while working at the University of Arizona in a research capacity. He has been traveling throughout the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, Sonora, and Baja California and to the Chihuahuan Desert Region of western Texas and northeastern Mexico in search of plants to add to the landscape palette of southern Arizona. His primary focus has been on perennials, shrubs, cacti, and other succulents that will tolerate at least some frost, preferably being hardy in at least USDA zone 9a.

In this informal presentation, Greg will give a show and tell of his top 5-6 desert adapted plants. Come prepared to ask questions because Greg is a firm believer that is how best to learn and retain new information. He has so many favorites, that he put up a list and threw darts to determine his current top 6 plants. Today being:
Anisacanthus quadrifidus
Buddleja marrubiifolia
Dalea frutescens
Justicia spicigera
Ruellia peninsularis
Thymophylla pentachaeta
Eremophila hygrophana

Being late April, we have missed spring wildflowers, but be sure to look for and plant the following come the September-October planting season:
Baileya multiradiata
Glandularia gooddingii
Hymenoxys acaulis
Penstemon parryi/superbus
